Just tread water

It's March, the month of reckoning. In addition to an increased academic workload, it's also time to flood countless inboxes with cover letters and resumes in hopes that someone, anyone, will let you have the privilege of manning their organization's xerox machine.

In anticipation of March (Internship) Madness, Newsweek ran an article on "Millennials" and how their work strategies are changing to fit with the instability of the contemporary job world. Gawker retorted with several articles, pro and con youngish-type people trying to work their way into media jobs in the current marketplace. The vague, and somewhat smug, tone of this coverage leaves me thinking about the state of the job market when I'm finally turned loose from college, which is beginning to look more like summer camp in comparison with the mind-numbingly frustrating process of finding a job at the same time as every other recent college grad.

When applying for jobs, I know that I'm well-qualified; however, almost every other applicant for the same job is going to be just as well-qualified. This is the new uniformity of the current internship and job market: you're just as excellent as everyone else. This logic made it possible for me to endure a summer that consisted of mowing lawns and yelling at small children. Maybe, just maybe, my luck will hold out and I'll stumble upon internship gold...

To add to my "case of the Mondays," casting has begun for a "Jersey Shore" spinoff, "Brighton Beach". According to Page Six, several cable networks are interested in the show, which would feature young Russian-Americans drinking lots of vodka in snazzy adidas sweatsuits.
