Blockbuster season

Summer vacation! Blockbuster movies! Ice cream for lunch! Maybe I'm the only person who would link all those activities together. Either way, below is what I wish was a trailer for an upcoming summer brain freeze flick.

Goldfrapp's latest video, "Alive,"directed by Legs (a branch of the media group Milk Studios), is hypnotic, unsettling, and hilarious all at once.  Goldfrapp has never shied away from off-kilter imagery in their videos, from decaying garbage (see Ride a White Horse) to kaleidoscopic Rorschach tests (Strict Machine) to crudely mummified male figures (Rocket and Ride a White Horse). The juxtaposition between hypnotic electronic beats and the grating imagery is furthered by the unexpected combination of two oft-parodied cultural images from the eighties: black metal and aerobics videos. Existing in opposite poles of the cultural spectrum, they're jammed together for a full-on electronic seizure under the watchful eyes of Alison, playing Olivia Newton John to her class of like-minded aerobics freaks. I love the way the song glides along on top of the multi-colored mess that ensues in this video.

Maybe the third Twilight installment will include occult dance-offs between goth metal dudes and jazzercise class members on a salvaged set from Xanadu. Can't be worse than the snoozers that make up the blockbuster playing field right now.
